] that's what comes of posting late at night! A haha is a sunken ditch (dry moat may be a better description) with a fence in it; the idea was to keep the livestock out of the garden without spoiling the view. From a distance the whole thing was invisible; upon close encounter whilst walking one cried 'Aha!' and if riding the onlookers cried HaHa! (? or similar)
