It's a symbol of the disaster that will strike and punish Edward -- in fact in the reconciliation dialogue at the end she tells him he is not a lifeless trunk, but a vigorous living being who will shelter others in his shade and around whom she will twine -- I am paraphrasing rather than look it up.

Going now to look for discussion of the A&E film which just ended... personally I prefer the book...
