] The reason I object to the view that allowing obligation
to silence one can perpetuate the 'bad' behaviour; even
now, as in some cases of child abuse, and when drug or
alcohol abuse in one member of a group is covered for by
the others rather than 'make waves' and risk discrediting
the whole group. ( I realise I'm getting a long way from
Mary Crawford and her relatives, but I'm not convinced the
case is any different)
I think this is a case of coming at a situation with
different histories. I certainly agree that one has an
obligation to speak up if by so doing one can halt some
evil, no matter what waves are made. I just don't think
Mary's comments fit into this situation. If you'll pardon
my being autobiographical, I'm coming at it from my own
awareness of betrayal when, in a social situation and for
no good reason except lack of thought, I mention something
negative about those closest to me.
