Frankly, I believe that it was out of her character to have not taken this course. I think Bronte betrayed JE by denying her this action. I think Bronte already had in mind JE nearly starving in the hedgerows and then surviving and couldn't get there without JE being passive about this. It was a plot devise which doesn't fit with JE's character.
