Very interesting observation. I am not a fan of Rebecca, my attraction to characters in literature has everything to do with emotion- I could not relate to Mrs De Winter at all and it goes without saying, have no opinion of the man in qs.
Actually i found old Danvers more interesting, so there you have it! Mrs DW is supposed to be strong and truly in love with that jerk but i found the whole scenario too concocted and quite at odds with strong character.
I found old Rochester more interesting and definitely thought that jane had little in common with Mrs DW(not to contradict the comparison, just opinion).
As I said, to be the most important drama in JE takes place when Jane leaves Rochester and struggles with her conflict. In contrast, the conflict is non existent in the same terms in Rebecca although the qs of murder is serious indeed. Therefore, in MHO the quality of literature is present as the characters in Rebecca(save Danny) are not so well developed.
