No, no, no! I did not mean--or say--that "favours bestowed
earn the right to indulge in 'bad' behavior without facing
the consequences...." But Mary is not so much making a
moral judgment in her comments at the Bertrams' dinner as
indulging in somewhat gratuitous negative remarks. There
was really no occasion to bring up the matter.
