In addition to the loathly figure of Mr Brocklehurst, there is the highly unorthodox (but approved by the author) creed of Helen Burns. No, the piety (in evangelical terms) of JANE EYRE is questionable, and was in fact questioned by reviewers at the time.

I can't resist adding that this year I read a pastiche in a story collection by a detective author (can't remember who) which began

"Reader, I strangled him"

and continued as you might imagine, Jane finding life with Rochester less than bliss. My friend Grace (who loves JE as I do) refused not only to read the tale but also to hear one more word about it!

Reginald Hill (of Dalziel and Pascoe fame) has written a story in which Emma takes similar measures with regard to Mr Knightley. Oh dear!!
