] i just want a jane eyre adaptation that's true to the original theme of the story, that's all(true, it's easier said than done). in other words, some broader or deeper intimation of her humanity - her huge soul or spirit - which has many more dimensions to it besides a romance with a man. such things have been accomplished(on rare occasions) in less than 2 hours of film.
] secondly, i don't think anyone would think of a 1990's jane eyre as just an "ugly chick", even if they said it.



Hmm, but how do you show "soul and humanity" in action, have her going out of her way to save kittens and puppies, have a halo painted around her head? This is why beauty is used as a visual short hand, we have learned to see the beautiful as good and dheroic unless it is proved otherwise. This tendancy increases dramatically for female characters.
