Unfortuenately films become plodding when they attempt to take on "serious" issues. Besides, it's only two hours long...

I agree with Erin that the reason for CB's rage is that she took notice of what was going on around her. Although I think it was more than that, today she'd rage against different issuess but I think she would still be angry. Think of her three main points: the role of women, the role of class, the role of other people percetions in laying out our fate. The first two have changed significantly but her feelings of being unacknowledged and unappreciated may actually have increased in our society. Today we wouldn't call her by the somewhat kind term "plain", she would have gone through high school as an "ugly chick"...

i just want a jane eyre adaptation that's true to the original theme of the story, that's all(true, it's easier said than done). in other words, some broader or deeper intimation of her humanity - her huge soul or spirit - which has many more dimensions to it besides a romance with a man. such things have been accomplished(on rare occasions) in less than 2 hours of film.
secondly, i don't think anyone would think of a 1990's jane eyre as just an "ugly chick", even if they said it.
