I have to weigh in on the Austen side of this debate. I've been slogging through JE, but I don't care for it, mainly because I don't find that I can relate to any of the characters. I suppose Jane and Rochester are the only characters that are not flat. I've been going back and forth on whether I like the story being told in the first person, and at times I supposed it suited, but lately I've been thinking that in P&P or S&S or Emma I did not want to know the heroine's every thought.
I also found this book to be quite moralizing or preachy?? In JA we certainly see who is at fault and why, but she doesn't go on and ON about it.
