In response to with no intention of comparing myself to CB- , written by Kathleen T on October 14, 1997 at 14:04:53

as I said above, I am in no way comparing myself to Charlotte Bronte ...

] But I have written a mystery series wherein the protagonist is a childless widow who lives in a trailer house and works as a waitress.

] I, personally, have been happily married for a very long time, have grown children and small grandchildren, haven't lived in a trailer since I was 18 and have never waited tables in my life.

] But I observe and I ask questions and I imagine and I make things up. And the combination of these ingredients must have reached the magic proportion, because I can't tell you how often people assume that I am living Tory Bauer's life.

] Kathleen, who is also not having an affair with any green-eyed married Seed and Feed dealer

while i haven't read your books, i think it's safe to take you at your word that you're no cb, and your books no je. your comment does apply to writing, in general, but the premise of my question(perhaps i wasn't clear), was that je is different from everything else, in that the writing is so VERY surprising in light of who the writer is, even after taking into account the good explanations that were offered in this thread. it's still a bit of a mystery to me.
