] Isn't it every woman's hope that a man would be improved, in character, or behavior, as a result of her love? This is a large part of the appeal of Rochester, or for that matter, Darcy.


This is a very sweeping statement. It does seem to ring true for many women, but it always seems very strange to me. And isn't it one of the things councellors always advise against holding out hope for? And do men find similar appeal in the idea of changing their women?
