What you describe is the sort of artiice JA seems to dislike. Do you suppose she took a midway position herself? She wouldn't be so wild as Mary, and we know she wasn't so proper as Fanny, judging by her family's staging of theatricals if nothing else?
Maybe we're supposed to be seeing another continuum here, as in Sense & Sensibillity?
