Love this topic!
I had mentioned Rochester's behaviour earlier because his behaviour seemed to stem from his condition. While I am very sypathetic of this factor I resist the urge to excuse the quality of his attitude towards Jane(I have similar thoughts about Heathcliff, although many a person has visions of being ravished by a rugged man such as him).
Just as a note, I would like to mention that this objection of mine may stem from my humble experience working in the domestic violence cause.
I do not mean to imply that Rochester beats Jane but the negative beahviour he exhibits is not in the same genre as Darcy's.
It is interesting to note how we would react if we become the object of such behaviour. I might add that I do know of a lot of women who consider that a man's looks, education, status and money are directly proportionate to the quality of respect he commands-both good and bad!
