Rochester is a character a lot of women hold dear in their hearts, though, for the life of me, I can't understand why. He is self-centered, arrogant, haughty- a driven man. I'm not totally unromantic- though perhaps verging on cynical- but I suspect that once they were married Jane would have soon had him under her thumb. But then Rochester certianly deserved it!

I think Rochester is like lots of men. They want to appear in charge, they are blustery full grown mastiffs, and some are afraid of them. But then someone comes along, scratchs them behind the ears, and they turn into little mewling puppies.
