Why do we love Rochester?

We had quite a discussion about Rochester's cruelty earlier in the group read. A number of us were very angry with him, and hadn't remembered his mean streak and how his actions hurt Jane. I wondered how those folks were feeling now.
Rochester has been reformed, he accepts what happened to him as God's judgement and has become a much more humble man-- does all this expiate his previous actions? Does he now "deserve" Jane? Do our romantic notions of Rochester stem his great need of Jane, both physically and emotionally?
