What about the Chestnut tree split by lightening? The two halves sticking together, though dead. Is that supposed to be Edward and Bertha? or Edward and Jane?
i'm not finished re-reading the book, so i'll have to think about that one some more. however, my impression after it was first struck was that rochester had been "torn" between his obligations and the love that he'd declared for jane; that his life had been irrevocably changed, if not completely shattered. maybe the zefirelli film gave me this idea, since r says to jane at the end(when he wonders how she could love him), "i'm lightning struck[and something to the effect that he was broken]".
