But she was in love before she wrote JE - quite desperately, in fact, with the professor at the school she and Emily went to in Brussels. He was married, and did not, apparently, return her feelings, but there is know doubt that she knew what being in love was like - even if she had not actually experienced love's return.




thank-you, kate. although i'm sure the method of dreaming about things at night no doubt had its effect(ref. h.c.'s great post below), i'm more convinced by the somewhat more down-to-earth explanation you offer. i'd forgotten she'd had some experience beyond haworth, which would seem indispensible for creating a romance quite so developed and striking. now, to explain john reed...and who really did build the pyramids? ;-)
