In response to Long words, written by Marsha on October 08, 1997 at 11:13:23
Actually I like long words she uses. For me, they make the whole flow more smoothly. But then I tend to use quite a few long compicated words in conversations, though it is a bad idea to use "seven-syllabulles" in a supermarket :-)
i'm with marsha and cheryl on this one, kathy. i didn't find the vocabulary to be distracting, but just kept a dictionary handy. on the other hand, as an engineer i tend to mull over small passages and forget the forest for the trees sometimes, usually taking a long time to finish a book. what did kind of throw me is the french passages - especially the longer ones that i couldn't figure out from the context(i'm having enough trouble learning spanish). at least she doesn't use as much french as she does in villette. btw, i agree with you about not using long words in the supermarket: i told the girl at the checkout the other day that i admired her physiognomy. she looked puzzled, and then said, "i think it's on aisle 3 with the rest of the wines".
