St John-passionate nature perverted?

St John is ambitious and he was pining away, so he found something to be passionate about. He had to feel that his life wasn't worthless, that it was dedicated to something noble. He seems to be a passionate nature perverted. Unlike Jane who is passionate about humans, he is passionate about dogma. If the events took another turn, I could see him as a cause-driven politician, a revolutionary, or even a totally mad lover. He seems to throw all of himself into what he is doing. Am I the only one who likes him a little?. I do feel sorry for his feelings for Rosamond.
But the proposal is horrible!
