And later, it never bothered me at all, but I think she does that as a habit. She started calling him that and now she is used to it. It is like a name now, and doesn't mean what it literally does, IMHO. You know, like a sort of a nickname.



to quote rochester: "pre-cise-ly". it certainly DOES NOT mean "master" any more. it's jane's very ironic love-name for him - ironic because jane's got rochester grovelling at her feet!
