I've just been reading the part where everyone is in the chapel at Sotherton and Mary makes several snide or evern derogatory remarks about the clergy and the church, unaware that Edmund is going to take orders.

I know she is characterized as pretty and vivacious, and Fanny is far from exciting, but I just don't understand how proper Edmund could fall for someone like Mary. So far in the story, she has made inappropriate remarks about her uncle, criticized the church, and made Fanny suffer by coveting her horse. Edmund's admiration of her seems to be something he doesn't even understand himself.
