In response to Homeless Jane, written by Cheryl on October 05, 1997 at 23:52:35
] How heart-breaking are these chapters! Poor Jane, penniless, starving, wandering the streets and moors, too proud to beg, but eventually having to to stay alive, sleeping out in the cold, wet night...
] While Charlotte makes us feel pity and tears for Jane, she also makes us squirm; how many of us have rebuffed the homeless?
] Difficult chapters to read, on many levels, but what amazing writing to produce such strong, visceral reactions in the reader!
This is the part of the book I (and the movies) usually skip over but I'm reading it this time. See what a good influence you all are!
What is your opinion (as Jane B says). Should Jane have run off like that. I mean I understand her doing it but was it the best way to deal with the problem. Think of Mrs. Fairfax and poor little Adele - not to mention Rochester. It seems to me rather cowardly not to mention just plain stupid to run away and nearly die rather than to stay and work on a solution.
