How heart-breaking are these chapters! Poor Jane, penniless, starving, wandering the streets and moors, too proud to beg, but eventually having to to stay alive, sleeping out in the cold, wet night...
While Charlotte makes us feel pity and tears for Jane, she also makes us squirm; how many of us have rebuffed the homeless?
Difficult chapters to read, on many levels, but what amazing writing to produce such strong, visceral reactions in the reader!
