] Of course, this is just my impression, but I don't think she knew that bertha was Rochester's wife. The most everyone knew was that Richester had an insane relative or an-ex mistress living there, and I don't credit Mrs F with so much penetration that she could figure out the rest. Plus, I don't think she is the type of woman to let Jane commit bigamy. She would probably speak up in church, or at least tell jane about it. Plus, and that is the telling point, IMHO, she looks on jane's behavior with approval when Jane is being teasing to Rochester, and doesn't allow him his high flights, but is still engaged to him as much as ever. It seems to me, Mrs F just doesn't want Jane to behave too head over heels, but she does not mind the fact of the marriage itself.

i just finished ch. 27 of this reading marsha, and i see that rochester says "mrs. fairfax may indeed have suspected something, but she could have gained no precise knowledge as to facts". it appears she at least didn't know that bertha was his wife. i feel that the answer to your original question is still basically the same, however: she was trying to put jane on her guard, and thought the circumstances didn't bode well for "love".
