The quality of the human spirit

I have to confess that P&P is my favorite novel and EB my favorite Protagonist. But, Jane Eyre does fulfill a need in me that P&P does not.
JE's character is governed by the quality of the spirit, that prevails inspite of abusive environments. it had a candour and innocence that is most unique.
I was struck by the innocence, passion and painful conflict that jane goes through when she leaves Rochester the first time. It is a very sophisticated and real depiction by a very clear hearted person.
In that respect this contrasts starkly with Elizabeth's refusal of Darcy, which is dramatic and modern. However, it does not have the conflict of Jane's predicament- of rejcting the man she loves.
I had not noticed this when I read JE a long time ago. Until I realised the real pain that conflicts do bring to all our lives.
