] I never "got" Heathcliff. I don't understand why he is evil to begin with or why anyone could possilbly find him the least bit attractive. Not even the MGM movie with Olivier could convince me that he was more than a really spoiled, arrogant so-and-so. That and he's pretty dull.
A character might be imperfect, commit loads of sins, doublecross everybody and be utterly selfish...and still be special. That is my reaction to Rochester.
He may be a bastard (that is still doubtful, IMO), but I still love him.
I guess this is just a matter of opinion, as is almost everything else.
