I think your comment about the first person although being general, was during your read of 'Moon and Sixpence'? I felt that in M&S, because 'I' was the narrator, a bigger distance was maintained, and I felt uneasy about that distance. Here I agree it draws us into Jane's world.
BTW, off topic, does any one else besides me have trouble with books written in present tense?
