It is still bothering me, but I can see how it has to be this way, because we are really only in on what Jane thinks and feels and her perception of everything. It makes us feel closer to the child Jane, it keeps the "secret" a mystery for longer (as if we didn't know!), and it makes Rochester more mysterious.
