He has no morals. If he wanted to it was possible for him to have his marriage to Blanche annulled but he does not. Possibly because it means athe return of her substanial dowry? He liek a character on a soap who does horrible things then says, "It's not my fault, folks."
Yes, he does repent, but only after he's lost his sight, his hand and his Jane.
