Remember the movie, "Gigi"? I love the line near the end where the uncle says something like, "It's the innocent ones that can amuse you for months." That is what finally convinced Gaston that he could NOT go through with it and do that to Gigi.
Besides, Jane had too much self-respect. In spite of all that had happened to her, she had survived and was stronger for it. Why should she give in now?
