] It was almost 20 years ago also when I first read this, but I did not really resent Rochester when he first meets Jane. When he took the fall from his horse, my first reaction was, "How embarrassing!" So I took his abrasiveness to mean embarrassment that he was forced to accept the help of a stranger and a woman (for that time anyway).
I agree with the embarassment theory, but let`s also remember that he is in pain. His ankle probably hurts like hell and he`s used to doing things by himself. No wonder he`s angry and frustrated. Good for him that SUPER-JANE comes to the rescue!
