] ]I well remember my initial aversion to Rochester. I thought "This man is a complete jerk and he's supposed to be this great romantic figure?" He is rude to Jane, short-tempered, in bad humor, gruff, etc... But Jane took it all in stride. She had been so used to being treated poorly by everyone that she didn't find it unusual or hurtful, I suppose.
Well, I never thought of Rochester as a jerk. I had a rather more difficult time getting over my anger towards Darcy, when I read that he had separated Jane and Bingley. I still do.
But what I wanted to say is that Jane is more easily intimidated by politeness and good manners than by roughness (she says so herself at some point). I mean, she doesn`t react to his gruffness, cause she has the upper hand: HE needs HER help, and, besides, cause she doesn`t feel in the least bit afraid (I don`t think it has much to do with "being used" to it). She may even feel a bit excited by the whole thing.
