In response to Rochester takes a nose dive, written by Cassie M. on September 29, 1997 at 17:11:13
] It was almost 20 years ago also when I first read this, but I did not really resent Rochester when he first meets Jane. When he took the fall from his horse, my first reaction was, "How embarrassing!" So I took his abrasiveness to mean embarrassment that he was forced to accept the help of a stranger and a woman (for that time anyway).
] I do remember thinking Jane was being too nice to him. I probably would have marched off and left him after he barked the first time. I guess it's good that I was not a governess in them days!
I remember thinking this! When they talk a couple of days later and he asks if JE thinks him handsome. I think he is trying to embarass her, but he can't do it. She accepts whatever he dished out or gives it back!
But too, I guess the reason they fall in love is because she looks beyond the jerk facade and accepts him for who he is, something not many women do.
