Rochester's motive

] Hurt interpretted Rochester's motive to be that he was trying to drive Jane away, because he knew there was a good chance she would end up hurt by everything that would happen later (which he was right about). He was trying to protect Jane, by trying to make her angry and upset with him.



I'm not sure that I agree with you, Ann, but it is an interesting idea...

So what do the rest of you think? Was Rochester trying to make Jane jealous with his attentions toward Blanche, or was he trying to drive her away?
