This part was one thing that I really liked about the William Hurt verion of the movie.

Hurt interpretted Rochester's motive to be that he was trying to drive Jane away, because he knew there was a good chance she would end up hurt by everything that would happen later (which he was right about). He was trying to protect Jane, by trying to make her angry and upset with him.
