think Aunt Norris was desperate for any acknowledgement of her 'generousity' and wanted Fanny to show gratitude to her.

She would have liked someone who would be thankful in excess, wouldn't she? Maybe she planned on a Fanny who would not only be her dog to fetch things, but a yeah-boss kind of person ever grateful for her aunt's condescension. A fawning, Mr Collins or Uriah Heep type -- or at least a grateful Harriet.
