The whole focus of a Catholic upbringing in those days, especially for girls, was to make you feel that you should subjugate yourself to the Church, parents and men in general. Except for the food and tb, Catholic schools shared many things with Lowood.
I went to catholic schools in India(including boarding school) and we were kept on a tight leash. Although i supposeit was better received in india(a conservative society) than it would be here.
we had to wear long hair in plaits with ribbons and I remember similar incidents as the one described above.
