i think that brocklehurst's general sentiments about appearance were commonplace in those days; in fact, one can still find plenty of sects that feel that way today. i can't imagine that miss t was the least bit surprised or even passingly amused by this. that's why i'm so puzzled! especially, as i say, when she's about to have a bunch of crying, traumatized pupils on her hands. the fact that she's used to this lout by now can't make it much easier. i keep wondering if an 1847 reader could clarify this very simply - i haven't got a clue! my best guess is that she's smiling because the school's suffering has finally reached absurd proportions(and she's going bonkers, as will i if i can't figure this one out).
