Could it be that Miss Temple is smiling at Mr. Brocklehurst's foolish belief that Julia Servern's curly hair is willful disobedience?
...I think now, that it's all of it that she's reacting to.
i think that brocklehurst's general sentiments about appearance were commonplace in those days; in fact, one can still find plenty of sects that feel that way today. i can't imagine that miss t was the least bit surprised or even passingly amused by this. that's why i'm so puzzled! especially, as i say, when she's about to have a bunch of crying, traumatized pupils on her hands. the fact that she's used to this lout by now can't make it much easier. i keep wondering if an 1847 reader could clarify this very simply - i haven't got a clue! my best guess is that she's smiling because the school's suffering has finally reached absurd proportions(and she's going bonkers, as will i if i can't figure this one out).
