In response to Jane's uncle, written by Debbie V on September 24, 1997 at 22:52:35

] ] Why wouldn't Jane even try to locate any family members? The doctor offered to help, but she blindly trusts a woman she hates. I would at least want proof that my relatives were beggars before I decided what is the best for me. That could have saved her from Lowood.

] What's more curious is that she seems so uninterested in the news from Bessie that she has an uncle in Madeira who took an interest in her. I would have expected her to seek him out right away but it's almost as if she doesn't register the information. Was she so excited about the prospect of leaving Lowood for the great unknown that the news just went right over her head? Or does she assume that, since she hasn't heard from him all this time, that he doesn't really care?

An uncle abroad may not have been able to do her any real good. Afterall, she had been left to the care and custody of her aunt and locating a foreign living uncle may have cost a large number of pound which her aunt most likely would not have been willing to spend on Jane unless she knew that she'd be reimbursed.
