Not looking for relatives

Hi! Hope you don't feel I am butting in on the discussion.
I think there are two factors to Jane's not looking for her uncle or other relatives. The first is that she is a child and even when children react vehemently, the reaction is of the unfocused emotional sort. The second reason is that as a child (and a poor relation) she has no power in this society. It would have taken a considerable amount of manpower and money to find relatives in the days before electricity, telephones and America's most wanted. Even if Jane had the inclination, she did not have the means.
