John and Jack

Someone said in response to my first post, that it was possible for John to have called Jane, Joan because he didn't care to get it right. However she calls him Jack. Is it mutual?
Jack is a diminutive from John (or so it used to be) For example I once read a book about John Barrymore, and his friends called him Jack.
In Russia, where I was born, diminutives are very common, and as I understand, they used to be so in England.
