Well, I know that in Europe (the continent) the biggest meal of the day is lunch. The children actually go home and eat it with their families in some cases. That could explain the small meals. They have a small breakfast....big lunch...and many smaller meals that constitute for dinner.

This could also be a possibility....If the administrators at Lowood only fed them small meals it is possible that they could save money by in fact...giving them less food through out the day. Many small repetitions of the same kind of meal could save on ordering larger quantities of food.
