You are forgetting able the regional accents of England. Remember, large parts of the eastern part of English was under the cintroll of teh Vikings for several hundred years not to mention, the Romans, French, it goes on and on. So it is hardly surprising that English ends up with three female forms of "John."
"Jenny" was pretty much the standard nickname for "Jane" in those days. "Jennifer", the name we think of today wasn't at all popular. So it is merely a question of fashion.
