Nora, I haven't read Moll Flanders, but when I heard this line in the adaptation, I thought first of Fanny, and Sir Thomas's regretable plea to his wife and sister in law to help preserve the distinction between Fanny and The Miss Betrams.

I don't think my edition says anything about Joan. Miss Mope, I'd think, might refer to what John Reed might consider to be sort of skulking around?

There's no mention of little Jane having household duties --- I think that's why Bessie says she's lower than a servant, because she does nothing to earn her keep.
