] Many people chose not to divorce the insane because doing so would give one the reputation of being irresponsible, ie witholding the care and support the spouse had a right to. The reforms occured in the early 1830's and were not immediately accpted. the Established Church, for example, held anyone taking advantage of the new laws as being immoral. This did not do much to reccomentd them in the marriage market.
