Actually, I never thought Edmund was perfect. In fact, he frustrates me to no end at some points in the book (when he writes to Fanny about how there is woman besides Mary that he could imagine as a wife, I want to smack him). I do believe, however, that Edmund is essentially a likeable character and fundamentally stronger than Henry Crawford, and that Edmund is the right man for Fanny.
