] That isn't true. He really was in love with her. If he had been doing itfor himself than how come he kept coming back when she refused him. She gave him NO encouragement. He did not come back for sport, but for her. HE LOVED HER!!
He was doing it because that's what she wanted him to do--improve himself. She didn't want him to persist in following her, but she did want him to see his errors and become a better man. He never would have tried, if he didn't think he might win her in the end. Darcy tried even though he knew that he would never win her in the end.
