I am so glad that there's some else willing to step forward with a dislike of the Brontes! When I read Jane Eyre for the first time when I was about 14, I loved it, it was the same when I read Wuthering Heights a year later. I had to re- read both for a couse and was suprised find that both of them left a sour taste in my mouth. All that brooding, that tight, constrained lack of humour, the strain of nearly subliminal masochism that runs in these work began to drive me batty. I read the Tennant of Wildfell Hall last year and I liked it though Anne Bronte isn't nearly as innovative nor as good a wordsmithas either of her sisters. Why? She knew the value of a well placed quip in a dark story.
I cannot like the Brontes because I find I cannot admire any of the men that the elder sisters created. I wouldn't want to live with either Heathcliff or Rochester. They are men to have a dirty weekend with, not men to settle with.
At least with Henry Crawford's real lack of moral fibre you get care, concern and a bit of a giggle instead of mean spirited amnipulation!
