I agree that JA was not a romantic. If she were, her characters would be willing to sacrifice anything for love.
This is completely opposite of what Austen conveyed in her novels. The only character I can think of in her novels who was willing to give up everything he held dear in order to be with his love is Darcy in his first proposal--and Austen gave him a slap in the face for it.

This is actually what I like best about Austen, and what I hate the most about the Brontes.
